One of my former students e-mailed me over the weekend regarding the pages below about my old school, Newton. He was one of those kids that teachers never forget...smart, funny, and kind. He's still that way today, and his words made this former teacher's heart sing. He said that I did make a difference in his life. Thank you, Bryan.

I just finished a story based on an incident in Shirley Mason's childhood. She was such an intelligent and creative person, and her childhood was so bizarre, that I wanted to write about the effects of societal judgments on the highly creative intellect. Shirley's art was always a mainstay in her life, no matter the circumstances around her. Though gone for ten years now ( it doesn't seem like that long), she remains my inspiration and my muse.
Excerpt from my story: "For as long as she could remember, nine year old Ardella had delighted in looking through one particular window. Every time she raised the shade and looked through its multiple panes she could see and hear, but others could not, marvelous things that lived just outside and over there."

Newton Elementary, where I taught for 33 years, is closing to make way for a brand new building. I took a walk down the halls of Newton and down memory lane as I remembered all my years there. My time teaching passed in the blink of my eye and now I have moved on to other ventures. I like to think that the young lives I touched benefited from their time in my classroom. I tried to make each student feel important and worthwhile and to find success in some way. To teach is to touch the future...
